Why the hell is pinterest already obsessing over pumpkins, fall, and Halloween. It’s not even August yet. CALM THE FUCK DOWN.
(2/2) regret that? and not killing someone on the spot doesn’t make you ‘redeemed’ it makes you a NORMAL PERSON______________________________________Ooh, boy, OUAT’s take on redemption is worthy of some harsh, extensive but much needed scrutiny.______________________________________Thing is, Regina has a privilege which supposedly entitles her to both power AND people & their unconditional consideration and loyalty. This privilege makes it completely justifiable for her to oppress, persecute, arrange public executions, endorse physical and sexual slavery, order unwarranted massacres and imprisonments of innocents, etc. Those who interfere with her privilege or immediate comfort - Snow, Emma - are instantly vilified and condemned because oppressors should be worshiped, coddled, catered to and patted on their mass murdering, controlling and possessive precious heads in our society. Sadly, that’s precisely the ideology A&E team is perpetuating and promoting_____________________________________________In a span of the past two decades and half Regina and Rumple could only engage in long term relationships with people who were their literal slaves - Graham and Belle, respectively. Because they, essentially, cannot build a commitment based on equality or let the other person have the power, needing to always be in control.____________________________________________The second Graham attempted to reclaim his agency he was murdered just as viciously and mercilessly as Milah when she dared to state she never loved Rumple’s entitled self. The reason why Belle has been lucky enough to escape this unenviable fate is because she has always been in a position of ultimate social, psychological and authoritative disadvantage over Rumple. Being a conformist as opposed to assertive, progressive and emancipated woman who would be his equal or would dominate over him like Milah did.___________________________________________________For people like Hook or Emma this mindset must be gross and unsettling because the ONLY type of relationship they are EVER inclined to build is a functional and productive partnership (“we make quite a team”) structured around encouraging and motivating one another. And which is fundamentally based on the notion of equality. Moreover, Hook has always been the one to give and endorse his female partner’s empowerment and strictly acknowledge the needs and desires of both Milah and Emma._______________________________________________Regina and Rumple’s privilege allows their “redemption” to be about refraining from mass murder, systematic power abuse, torture, oppression and exploitation of people because they have enough power to practice those atrocities and get away with them. Their half-baked faux-rehabilitation is about having a chunk of their privileges eliminated, complaining about it and preserving the REST of their privileges by still having their authority acknowledged by their former victims (who should, by all the logic, be throwing them in jail to serve a life long term for systematic power abuse, political criminality, mass slaughter, rape, murder and attempted murder of family members such as Milah, Henry Sr and Rumple’s attempt on Henry’s life, etc. But logic is clearly not among the strongest sides of OUAT). And sharing the same dinner tables with people they persistently terrorized, abused and tormented for decades by relentlessly exploiting their power and depriving them of agency/free will for 28 years because, again, they had the privilege to get away with it and not face any due consequences. And only stop when interfered with and when their malicious schemes directly backfired on them thus prompting them to outline new plans and adjusting to new circumstances.________________________________________________Hook’s rehabilitation is about learning to NOT react violently to horrendous abuse and oppression inflicted on HIM, either by corrupt and tyrannic governments or psychotic, malicious sadists prone to killing and maiming people when denied a romantic love. Hook’s character development arc is about pardoning a person who murdered someone he loved in cold blood in front of him and rendered him physically disabled by taking advantage of the power this person had over him and assumed by corrupt methods.___________________________________________It’s about repeatedly laying his life on the line for other people and rebuilding said life after it has been entirely and irreversibly destroyed by power holders. And reconsidering his radical and controversial ways of subjecting those people to responsibility for the crimes committed against him and most importantly his loved ones. About reevaluating and reexamining his prioritizes and deviating from toxic agendas on behalf of healthier and more honorable ones. Such as forming constructive and profound bonds with people (whether platonic or romantic), helping reuniting their families (as opposed to tearing them apart like Regina and Rumple have been doing for decades and centuries). Offering his unwavering support to the Charmings and ceaselessly placing their well being, safety and emotional comfort above that of his own ever since he independently and consciously chose to turn his ship around and attempted to fix whatever damage he might have done. Providing his assistance and services to them during a life threatening journey and allowing his oppressor on board of his ship (his only home).__________________________________________________Contrary to feeling entitled to their attention and compassion because he is a “nice oppressor who hasn’t killed anyone in ages” and/or because others are “brats” who are practically asking to be persecuted and abused, at least according to Regina’s twisted and morally dubious mind. And contrary to slipping back into murderous and/or bigoted mode to solidify his position of power when no one is watching (like Rumple did by killing mentally unstable and unarmed Zelena who wasn’t even directly responsible for Neal’s death or like Regina did when threatening to rip Zelena’s heart out if the latter doesn’t conform to her rules because that’s the textbook oppressive mentality rather than a behavior of a civilized and competent leader/ruler). Hook’s redemption is about “yes, I still make my mistakes and feel genuinely guilty if they negatively affect others because even though I tend to backslide and be selfish out of despair and when confronted with the prospect of more loss my personal issues STILL don’t make my egotistical and harmful choices okay or excusable”.____________________________________________Reason why he’s ultimately held to a visibly different standard is because he is lacking the glamor and privilege of Rumple and Regina that would ENTITLE him to people, to abuse and oppress them. And that would make it oh so “generous” and “noble” of him to refrain from doing what oppressors are expected to do by definition - and when they don’t they are coddled and praised because heavens forbid they set out on another rampage. Regina’s treatment by the narrative and other characters being the easiest example of it._________________________________________________Regina’s “redemption” is about outwardly stating she doesn’t regret years of mass murder, oppression, rape, etc as long as her egotistical goals were attained and lectures OTHERS on the consequences of their actions when said actions include defying HER tyrannic dictatorship (such as Emma saving Marion).________________________________________________Therefore it would definitely be reasonable if Hook becomes extremely wary of Regina’s oppressive and victim blaming logic, firmly siding with and supporting Emma devotedly and determinedly like he has been doing infallibly all along.
Veronica Mars is more than a Nancy Drew figure for teenage girls growing up in the 21st century. She is a flawed character who faces many challenges and hard knocks, but has the strength and courage to pick herself back up again time after time. She’s dealt a bad hand, but she faces the world with sass and snark and refuses to back down. She stands her ground, stands up for others who can’t, and makes sure that people who abuse their power pay. Veronica Mars is a hero. [x]
